करौली (Karauli) state was founded by Maharaja Arjun Dev pal in 1346 AD. Earlier Karauli, along with Alwar, was part of the Matsya kingdom, according to the legend of Mahabharata. The modern princely state Karauli was founded in about 995 by Raja Bijai Pal,a Jadon Rajput ruler, who is 88th in descent from the Hindu god Krishna. The Chandravanshi Jadon Rajputs are descendants of the preceding Mathura Kingdom, founded in 900AD by Raja Brahm Pal.
Kaila Devi Ji temple situated 23 km from Karauli and 37 km from Gangapur City in the Rajasthan state in India. The temple is located on the banks of the Kalisil river, a tributary of the Banas River in the hills of Trikut, 2 km to the north-west of Kaila village. The temple is dedicated to the tutelary deity, goddess Kaila Devi, of the erstwhile princely Jadaun Rajput rulers of the Karauli state. Religious fairs are held in Karauli in March-April(Chaitra) and Sept-Oct(Ashwin). Lakhs of devotee pay visit this temple every year on the Ashtmi of Shukla in Chaitra and it is called "Lakkhi Mela". Devotional song for Kailadevi is known as Languria(लंगुरिया). Kailadevi is also known as Kaila Mata. It is a marble structure with a large courtyard of a checkered floor. In one place are a number of red flags planted by devotees. Kaila Mata is also kuldevi of Chandravanshi Jadon (Jadoun) (Jadaun) (जादौन) Rajputs orginated from Karauli, people often use this slogan in Karauli "जादौन को जादौन मारे, या मारे करतार!"
Only temple of Anjani Mata, mother of Hanuman Ji, is located in Karauli on the top of hill with beautiful surrounding like Karauli city on one side and Panchana Dam on other side.
Mahaveer Ji, Shri Mahaveer Ji 24th Tirthankar temple in Karauli district on the banks of Gambhiri River. Earlier known as Chandanpur, this small village became famous as a Jain religious site after an ancient idol of Mahaveer was excavated from its soil several hundred years ago and the temple was constructed. Thousands of worshipers flock from across India to catch a glimpse of this famous statue. On fullmoon of Chaitra every year, biggest Fair of Jain Religion is organised.
The Animal fair is held at Karauli in the month of February every year for a week which coincides with the festival of Shivratri. This fair is one of the oldest animal fairs of Rajasthan.
